Why are high school movies not the same as in the past?

We’re referring the late 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s boom in popular high school movies, and the lack-there-of now. Does anything compare to Ferris Bueller or The Breakfast Club, or are there better genres that dominate presently?

I am too old to reply (almost 80).  Young people have changed so drastically from the time I was young, that I don’t bother to even watch today’s movies about the young.  Times have changed so much, and wholesome movies are hard to come by.  The movie industry has deteriorated so much, it’s hard to make a comparison to movies of the 30s, 40s, and/or 50s.

You are old for 53.  I’ve seen some wonderful movies recently.  One of them is “Nebraska” which stars people well over 60.  Go to see it.

Some of the old movies were pretty lame. As a kid and teen ager I went to the movies every Saturday.  I am still a big movie fan.

High schoolers have changed.  They are not as naive as former generations.  Many of their parents are working full time and they are left on their own.  So the movies about them reflect the present time.  The world around them stresses sex and violence.  So what do you  expect the movies to express?

Sherm, if you are not in high school why are you watching high school movies??

the technology has come so far–movies are far more interesting today because of this.  Also, the amount of violence and sex in high school movies has dramatically increased.  It appears that violence and sex sells movies in general and this has unfortunately trickled down to the high school movies

High school is not what it use to be , neither are they movies.  High school movies are laced with sexual explicits and immoralities. It is difficult to sit through one of these movies with your child. You would be too embarrassed to do so. The plots of these movies are so over the edge. What these teens are now watching, I would be embarrassed to watch when i was at age thirty.

Because of the lack of possibility of college now for most poor high school graduates, the lack of a bright future, shootings and murder in school, and now, one kid set himself on fire, and died.

Buddhist Monks on fire were a somewhat common sight during the Vietnam war, and, I fear, because of the hopelessness of some kids, this trend of death by fire, will increase.

The bullying. Because of bullies, each of the school shooters, decided that there was no other way out but to get revenge. SInce President Regan, funding for mental health needs has been cut, with the best of years, just keeping what was spent the year before, or a 10% cut. I expect it to get a lot worse. But not gun violence.

Nerds can come up with several very creative ways of getting back.    There are many possible weapons of mass destruction, one that I can think of, with the 2 parts readily available chemicals, combined, causes a nerve gas to spread. Does that sound like good school fun when the entire school could be killed off? ( I was in the US Army, and was taught how to use what was availble to accomplish my mission with what is at hand.)

Back when I was in school, the worst 2 things was the possibility of total nuclear war,and being drafted into the military. Now, just going to or from school, or even being at school, can mean your death.

Drugs, worse than pot are sold openly. I saw one kid shooting up something, then he walked into the high school.

Some high school kids have AIDS; and other incurable sexual diseases.

The nightly gun fire in some city area’s is more than the war zones at war. AT least the soldiers can fire back at their attackers.

How many of the high school kids can now name 5 or more dead? Most of them. Dead either from guns or drug overdoses.

Frankly, I will not go to a movie like what I have just described. Death school where all good kids go to die, is not in my favorite movies list..

I have no idea how many high school students there are nationwide.  No doubt multi-millions.  Yet you are talking as though shootings happen in every school, that all the kids have guns and are high on drugs.  And all know some kid who has been killed.  Ridiculous.

Kids in your youth time had to practice ‘drop drill’ to prepare for an A bomb attack.  As though getting under your desk and protecting your head would have helped.  That was real scary time.  The threat of nuclear attack was much worse than a fear of a random shooting.

Any kid who totes a gun has a negligent parent.  I don’t know any kid who has experienced violence in his/her school.

There are plenty of movies that don’t have ‘death school’ plots (whatever that is).

Read movie reviews in your local paper or Roger Ebert on line.  You will find plenty of good films that will suit your taste.

I think your in denial, the degree of violence in schools are different but there is violence in every school,  There is bullying everywhere and always have been its just more published. there is drugs and alcohol in every high school the drugs are different based on location. As a mother of teenagers I watch the movies just so I know what they are watching some are decent some are just plain crazy . Television censorship has changed drastically through the years , what would have been fined years ago are now everyday sayings. Movie dialog and actions have changed and I find myself asking the same questions my mother asked me about the movies I watched as a teenager.

The old themes of boy-meets-girl whi is interested in someone else who turns out to be a creep then boy saves girl and wins her heart, well that story has been done to death do they have to do something different to make it interesting. Even the social issues have been done such as drugs, teen pregnancy, gays, etc. There are some good musicals out there. I guess I’m saying most of the new movies are old themes with new actors.
